What is Hypnobirthing?

Many parents discover my website while searching for hypnobirthing classes in Perth, but they’re often unsure what hypnobirthing actually involves.

At its heart, hypnobirthing is about replacing fear with understanding. Rather than relying on hypnosis in the stage-show sense of the word, it teaches practical skills that help parents work with labour instead of feeling overwhelmed by it.

These techniques typically include breathing exercises, relaxation, visualisation, positive mindset strategies, and practical ways for birth partners to provide support.

Research suggests that when parents understand how labour works and feel safe, informed, and supported, they often feel more confident and better able to adapt if birth takes an unexpected turn.

These are skills that can be valuable whether you’re planning a physiological birth, an epidural, an induction, or a caesarean birth.

My Approach to Birth Preparation

I taught the Hypnobirthing Australia™ programme for over 10 years and continue to value many of the breathing, relaxation, and partner-support techniques that helped thousands of families prepare for birth.

Over time, however, I found myself wanting the freedom to teach beyond a branded curriculum.

As a Registered Midwife, Certified Childbirth & Early Parenting Educator, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), and NDC-accredited health professional, I wanted to include the latest evidence on labour physiology, pain science, informed decision making, breastfeeding, newborn behaviour and biologically normal infant sleep.

That’s why I developed my own independent birth education programme.

Today’s workshops combine the most effective elements of hypnobirthing with more than 25 years of clinical experience supporting Perth families through pregnancy, birth, and early parenting.

Rather than focusing on achieving one particular type of birth, my goal is to help you understand what is happening, work with your body, adapt if circumstances change, and leave your birth feeling informed, respected and proud of yourself.

“It’s not about having the perfect birth. It’s about understanding your choices, trusting yourself, and feeling supported every step of the way.”

~ Pip Wynn Owen

What You’ll Learn in My Birth Preparation Workshops

Preparing for birth isn’t about memorising a breathing technique or hoping everything goes according to plan.

It’s about understanding how your body works, learning practical skills that help you work with labour, and feeling confident enough to adapt if birth takes an unexpected turn.

My workshops combine the best of hypnobirthing with current evidence about birth physiology, breastfeeding, and newborn behaviour, helping you feel prepared not only for birth but also for life with your baby afterwards.

Understanding Labour

Learn how hormones, your nervous system, movement , and the birth environment influence labour.

You’ll understand why feeling safe matters and how your body is designed to birth.

Informed Decision Making

Understand common interventions, your options and how to remain actively involved in decisions throughout labour.

You’ll leave knowing how to ask questions with confidence.

Breathing & Relaxation

Learn breathing, visualisation, and relaxation techniques to help you stay calm and work with contractions.

These skills can be used in physiological birth, induction, epidural, or caesarean birth.

Breastfeeding Preparation

Learn what happens during the first hours after birth, how breastfeeding works and simple strategies that can help get feeding off to a positive start.

Birth Partner Skills

Discover practical ways your birth partner can support you using massage, acupressure, positioning, communication and emotional reassurance.

Partners leave knowing exactly how they can help.

Newborn Behaviour

Understand what babies are biologically designed to do in the early weeks, including feeding, sleeping, and seeking comfort.

Knowing what’s normal helps parents feel far more confident.

Whether you’re looking for a comprehensive birth education workshop, practical skills for your birth partner, personalised one-to-one support, or extra preparation for an induction, there’s an option to suit your needs.
